Mental Training for Athletes

What is Mental Training?

If you want to improve your performance as an athlete, there are many things you can do.  You can hire a coach for physical workouts.  You can hire a strength trainer for weight and strength workouts, and a nutritionist to help you put together a healthy diet to aid performance and recovery.  If you want to improve your mental game, you can hire a mental skills consultant.  Mental skills are integrative tools to help enhance performance and can help any level athlete cope with and successfully navigate the mental challenges in sport such as:
  • Managing pre-performance anxiety
  • Coping with pressure situations
  • Building confidence
  • Learning how to cope with distractions and focus on the important aspects of performance
  • Recognizing and turning around negative self-talk
  • Making goals work for you

FAQ

Where are the sessions conducted?
If you live within 15 miles of Concord, California, we can arrange for a place to meet in person (typically a Starbucks or public place).  For customers outside this area, we can arrange to online meet via Zoom.

Most athletes will meet once a week or every other week.  It is helpful to have a consistent approach with the sessions.

What about athletes who are under 18 years old?
Athletes who are under 18 years old will need to have a parent or guardian sign the Training Agreement prior to starting the sessions.

Is there an expiration date to use the sessions?
Sessions must be completed within 1 year of purchase.

Session Format

Mental Skill Training is a process of discovery, learning, change, and adaptation.  Through the Starter Package (an athlete's first 5 sessions), the athlete and I will go through several phases together.
  • Discovery: a series of questions to help the athlete learn about themselves and increase their level of self-awareness; how they currently operate, think, and behave.
  • Imagination: take a look at how things can be different.  What would it look like to be able to successfully cope with pre-race nerves?  Or to get excited for hard challenges?
  • Tools: what mental skills tools are right for you?  Learn mental skills that are personalized for you and your specific challenges.
  • Application:  give the mental skills a test drive.  Many athletes know what they need to do, but lack in applying this knowledge.
  • Reflection: use reflective practice and questioning to help guide future use of mental skills.  Athletes look at what worked, what didn't, and how to change the mental skills learned.
